When should I get a tan for my event?

How early should I get a tan for my special event?
Weddings, dances, parties and even just a date night are special events in this thing we call life.  Of course, when an airbrush spray tan is to be part of the event, timing is important.

In our opinion, the very best time to get an airbrush tan from Spraytopia is 1-2 days before the special event.  Even though our particular solution will last at least a week to 10 days, it looks the brightest and most beautiful the 2 days following the spray.  This will also ensure that the bronzer has been washed off of your skin, and will not rub off onto that special clothing.   In the event that 1-2 days before is not an option, contact your spray tech professional as soon as possible to discuss alternative plans.

How to remove leftover spray tan spots?

How can I get ALL of the spray tan residue off of my skin?
Since we have already established that the way to get the best airbrush tan is to have perfectly exfoliated skin, getting all of the spray tan residue off is a really important step in the process.  There are a couple of things that can be done when you are ready for the tan to come off.  First, soaking in a good long hot bath, while scrubbing with a loofah or old thin washrag is the best thing you can do to remove the tan.  However, if there are still a few places with residual tan, you might try using a body scrub.
Attached is a recipe for a completely natural homemade citrus body scrub that we like.  We hope you will enjoy the exfoliating qualities as much as we do.

Citrus Body Scrub:
1/2 cup sea salt
1/2 olive oil
1 or 2 slices of lemon
1 or 2 slices of oranges
Put all of the above ingredients into a blender, and blend.  According to your preference, you can either leave the citrus slices unpeeled or peel them.  Either way, the scrub is great smelling, and leaves the skin feeling smooth and free of any spray tan residue.  Enjoy!

Can I wear shoes and socks after the tan?

With winter weather approaching, it is very tempting to want to wear those warmer shoes or socks to your spray tan appointment.  However, unless you want to look like you are wearing permanent socks, it is best to wear shoes without absorbent qualities to the tanning salon.  Leave those cute UGGs at the house, and go for the spray tan's best friend- the flip flop, instead.  It is only for a little while, so that the tan can completely dry.  We have found that after about an hour or so,and from then on-  it does not harm the tan to put on warmer shoes.

Can I exercise after my spray tan?

This week we have been asked numerous times:  "Can I exercise after I get my tan?".
The answer is that the tan needs to fully set first.  The first 8-12 hours after receiving the tan are the most critical in terms of not getting it wet.  If at all possible, you (the client) need to wait at least the full 8 hours before sweating profusely.  Otherwise, the sweat will act just as water to the tan, and will cause it not to fully develop.
After the tan has fully developed, however, exercising is not really cautioned against, unless it is excessive.  This is due to the fact that excessive sweat can have a bit of an exfoliating quality.  So, if you do sweat alot, you might notice a little bit of wear and tear on your underarms or places that perspiration sits.  If this is the case, simply use the tan extend in those places to get the most out of the life of your tan.  Also, if exercise is causing you to shower more than once per day, the showering alone will cause the tan to fade faster.  Remember, the more showers you take while having a spray tan, the quicker it will fade.

What To Do About Places That Wear Off Faster?

What do I do about the spots that seem to wear off faster?  Almost every woman has places or spots that tend to wear off a little faster than the rest of her body.  According to research, one of the most common reasons is our hormones, along with excessive sweating, and long, hot showers.  You might notice between the breasts, the bend of the elbow, back of the knee, or the top of the back seem to be places that the tan fades fastest (It's different for each woman).
The problem that is easily remedied is the top of the back, caused by the long hot shower.  If you can stand away from the shower head a bit, and take a little shorter (maybe cooler) shower, the top of the back should last much longer.  Obviously, we can't just change our hormones over night; and for those that exercise, excessive sweating is difficult to avoid.  So, what to do?  First of all, with our particular solution, patting dry with a towel, instead of rubbing dry will definately help extend the life of the tan.  However, the best thing that can be done is to use tan extender of some sort.  There are a variety of products on the market today that will help you get the most out of the life of your tan.  By simply applying the extender to the particular place that wears off on YOUR body, the life of your tan can be extended by several days.  Results will typically be seen in 4-6 hours.  If an immediate result is needed, bronzing powder can be used to "fill in"  those places while waiting for the extender to react with your skin.

First Things First...

"What can I do to make my tan last?"
It seems as though we are asked some form of that question on a daily basis.  The answer is not as complicated as you might think.  Although there are numerous things a person can do to maintain the tan after receiving it, the most important thing is what is done before coming to see us for your spraytan.  According to all of the research we can find, THE most important thing in maintaining an airbrush tan is to EXFOLIATE before receiving the tan.  The reason for this is that the DHA (active ingredient) really only soaks into the epidermis, or top layer of skin.  So, the quicker you shed your top layer, the quicker the tan is gone, and vice verse.  If you have exfoliated well prior to receiving the tan, there should only be a few things to do afterward  to maintain the tan.    For our particular solution, the main thing to remember afterward is:  Moisturizer is your friend!  (Just make sure it doesn't have mineral oil or petroleum in it.)  Just as the exfoliation helped before you got your spraytan, hydrating the skin afterward keeps it from shedding so quickly.  You will be amazed at how much longer the tan can last with just these few important steps. Most clients enjoy their tan for at least 7-10 days, and a few can go up to 2 weeks.
